5 Important Lessons to Take Into 2021

I think we can all agree that 2020 has been one heck of a year. For many people, it may have been one of the most challenging and difficult years of their life. Amidst a global pandemic, we also went through a huge U.S. presidential election, racial inequality reawakening, and environmental crises. Life as we knew it completely changed, and we were forced to adapt with the circumstances. Although challenging, it can also be argued that this year was necessary. For many, it offered a reality check and taught us some very important lessons. As January 1st is only three days away, this week we wanted to take a second to reflect on some of the important lessons 2020 has taught us.

1. Appreciate Time With Loved Ones

With social distancing guidelines and travel restrictions, much of our time this year was spent away from family and friends. Holidays and celebrations looked different, and we could not always see everyone in person. Zoom parties and drive-by birthdays became the new normal. We could not hug and six feet became the golden rule. All of this time apart really made us realize how much we may have taken time with our loved ones for granted. Simple things like hugs have become that much more special. One of the most important lessons to take into 2021 is to appreciate every moment you have with your family and friends, because that could change very quickly.

2. Do Not Take Your Health for Granted

The virus does not discriminate. No matter what your age, gender, or race – anyone could catch the illness and be affected significantly. Those that had previous or underlying health issues were more at risk for detrimental symptoms, however even healthy individuals faced serious effects. Countless lives were lost this year, and so many families were impacted. Our heart goes out to anyone who experienced loss this year. These were tremendously difficult times and have really allowed us to see how we often take our health for granted. Reflecting back now, we see just how precious life is, and how important it is to count our blessings for good health every day.

3. Self-Care Should Always be a Priority

This year we were all forced to slow down. In March, as we rapidly shifted to a lock down, we saw stores, restaurants, movie theaters, and amusement parks all close. Businesses and schools shifted towards a virtual environment, and everyone was sent home. Whether you wanted to be home or not, the circumstances made it a requirement. For many of us, this was the first time in a long time we were forced to slow down. We realized how fast-paced our lives had become, and we did not really know what to do with all this “time off” as we were not used to it. Although forced, it made us realize the importance of slowing down. Even once this is all over, we hope people will continue making time for themselves a priority. Self-care is important and slowing down is vital for our mental health.

4. We Are All More Similar Than Different

No matter who you are or where you were, everyone experienced the challenges brought about by this difficult year. We all experienced the emotions, the fear, and often the frustration. This year, we also saw a major reignition of the racial movement in America. Many of us spent the year listening and learning about things we may never have to experience, but others are forced to live with. On a global scale, we all shared the hardships of this year together. In many ways, we believe this has really connected us. We are all more similar than we are different, and it is so important to use our voices to empower. It is important to practice kindness and think about perspective.

5. You Are So Much Stronger Than You Think

I think we can all agree that none of saw this year coming. No one anticipated any of it. If you would have told me this time last year that we would spend much of this year at home, wearing masks, and away from our friends – I would not have believed you. However, we did. It has been an unprecedented year and we have faced challenges we would have never even thought of having. The world adapted. We adapted. And this is something to acknowledge. We are much stronger than we often think, and you should be very proud of yourself for hanging in there and navigating through all the obstacles this year has placed in front of you.
